PDF flipbook libraries for JavaScript

A PDF flipbook library renders the pages of a PDF with pdf.js and turns them with a page-flip animation. No popular open-source library does both: the usual route is pdf.js plus StPageFlip, wired by hand or through a small wrapper such as react-pdf-flipbook-viewer or @agilehub/vue-pdf-flipbook. zinejs, DearFlip, and Real3D ship PDF support built in, and the Nutrient and Apryse SDKs publish flipbook samples built on turn.js.

Facts checked October 2026. zinejs is built by Awecode, which publishes this site. Competitor facts link to their sources, and each page says where the competitor is the better choice.

Every open-source package in the table draws fewer than 800 downloads a week, and none of them offers right-to-left reading or PDF text search. For scale, pdfjs-dist itself draws about 33 million downloads a week. Download counts are for 5 to 11 October 2026, and sizes are the published files compressed with gzip at level 9.

Building it with pdf.js and StPageFlip

The do-it-yourself route renders each PDF page to an image or canvas with pdfjs-dist and passes the pages to StPageFlip. pdfjs-dist 6.4.299 costs 131.4 KB min+gzip for the main file and 374.6 KB for the worker, and StPageFlip adds 10.2 KB. Both are free for commercial use, under Apache-2.0 and MIT.

The cost is the work around the flip. StPageFlip receives flat pages, so text search, outline, clickable links, and lazy rendering have to be built on top of pdf.js by hand. StPageFlip also has no right-to-left mode or zoom and has not shipped a release since April 2021; the StPageFlip comparison covers those gaps.

The small wrappers

Most of the open-source PDF flipbook packages are pdf.js plus StPageFlip with a component around them, so they inherit StPageFlip's limits. All of them are young and lightly used, with at most one GitHub star.

  • react-pdf-flipbook-viewer adds zoom, sharing, and fullscreen. It requires React 19 as a hard dependency, expects Tailwind, and loads the pdf.js worker from unpkg. The last release was in May 2025.
  • @agilehub/vue-pdf-flipbook is a Vue 3 component first published in September 2026. It pins pdfjs-dist 6.2.108 and ships about 2 MB of pdf.js chunks inside its own package.
  • @bippy-ui/pdf-flipper is a React component with its own CSS flip and 75 to 150 percent zoom, at version 0.1.2.
  • @jaymanyoo/pdf-book-viewer injects pdf.js 3.11 and StPageFlip from public CDNs at runtime, publishes raw TSX without a build, and links to a repository that no longer exists.

They are a quick start for a prototype. For production, check each one's maintenance and how it loads pdf.js before relying on it.

Commercial jQuery viewers

DearFlip, Real3D, and 3D FlipBook each sell a JavaScript edition with PDF support, three.js page turns, and a full toolbar. DearFlip JS costs $49 a year for one site and needs jQuery; the DearFlip alternatives page covers it. Real3D JS costs $99 on CodeCanyon and needs no jQuery; see the Real3D comparison.

3D FlipBook's jQuery edition is GPL-2.0 on npm as 3d-flip-book (also published as flip-book), with about 500 downloads a week across both names, but its last release was in July 2020. WowBook, a $25 jQuery plugin on CodeCanyon, has not been updated since October 2020.

Enterprise PDF SDKs

Nutrient (formerly PSPDFKit) and Apryse (formerly PDFTron) sell full PDF SDKs with annotation, forms, and signing. Both publish a flipbook sample that renders pages with the SDK and turns them with jQuery and turn.js. Nutrient prices on request, and Apryse lists entry packages from $1,500.

These suit a team that already licenses the SDK. The samples rely on turn.js, whose GitHub license bars commercial use, so check turn.js licensing before shipping one; the turn.js page covers the terms.

Where zinejs fits

@zinejs/pdf renders pages on demand through pdf.js, and the optional toolbar adds text search, an outline from the PDF bookmarks, thumbnails, print, and download. Right-to-left reading, pinch and wheel zoom, keyboard navigation, and screen reader page announcements are built in, and TypeScript types ship with the package.

The limits are real. Commercial use needs a $20 license per site, zinejs renders images and PDF pages only, and it has no React or Vue component wrappers; it mounts on a DOM element, as the React guide shows. Links inside a PDF are not clickable. On WordPress, the zinejs Flipbook plugin (version 1.1.0) is free under the GPL.

Which to pick

  • Free and MIT, with no need for search or right-to-left: pdf.js plus StPageFlip, or react-pdf-flipbook-viewer or @agilehub/vue-pdf-flipbook for a ready component.
  • Search, outline, right-to-left, or keyboard access without building them: zinejs.
  • A jQuery site that wants 3D page turns from a vendor: DearFlip JS or Real3D.
  • A team already licensed for Nutrient or Apryse: their flipbook sample.

The open-source wrappers are fine for a flip effect on a PDF. For a reader with search and right-to-left support, zinejs does the work they leave out.

Questions

Is there a free PDF flipbook library for JavaScript?

Yes, but only small ones. react-pdf-flipbook-viewer and @agilehub/vue-pdf-flipbook are MIT licensed and draw a few hundred downloads a week each. 3D FlipBook's jQuery edition is free under the GPL, and zinejs is free for non-commercial use.

Can StPageFlip display a PDF?

Not directly. Each PDF page has to be rendered to an image or canvas with pdf.js first and then passed to StPageFlip, which leaves search and links to be built by hand.

Does pdf.js have a flipbook mode?

No. The pdf.js viewer offers scrolling and spread modes but no page-flip animation, so every flipbook library adds its own flip on top of pdf.js.

What is the best React PDF flipbook?

For a free component, react-pdf-flipbook-viewer, accepting that it needs React 19 and has no right-to-left mode or search. For search, outline, and right-to-left reading, zinejs mounts in React with a ref and useEffect and costs $20 once for commercial use.
