Hosted flipbook makers vs a self-hosted library

FlipHTML5, Heyzine, Flipsnack, Issuu, and Publuu are hosted flipbook makers: a team uploads a PDF, the service hosts the book, and the website embeds it in an iframe. They are the better choice for teams without a developer, or for anyone who needs analytics, lead forms, or a hotspot editor. zinejs is the self-hosted alternative, where the flipbook runs on your own domain with no subscription, vendor branding, or account that can lapse.

Facts checked October 2026. zinejs is built by Awecode, which publishes this site. Competitor facts link to their sources, and each page says where the competitor is the better choice.

Prices and limits

Prices are annual billing in USD, read from each vendor's pricing page on 13 October 2026. Vendors change these often and localize them by country.

The hosted tools are subscriptions, so the cost repeats. Heyzine, the cheapest without branding, comes to $177 over three years against a single $20 zinejs license, though Heyzine includes hosting and an editor that zinejs does not.

When a hosted maker is the better choice

A hosted maker needs no developer. A marketing team uploads a PDF, adjusts the look, and shares a link or an embed code the same day.

The paid tiers also bundle tools that a library leaves to you. Reader analytics and lead forms start at $108 a year on Heyzine, and FlipHTML5 Platinum adds a page editor with video and hotspots. Flipsnack Enterprise offers SSO and security certifications, and Issuu and Yumpu put public publications in front of their own reader audiences. Issuu and FlipHTML5 can also sell digital issues.

When a self-hosted library is the better choice

A library keeps the book on your domain and your server, with no third-party iframe, no vendor logo, and no reader data passing through another company. When we checked, the consent banner on issuu.com listed 87 advertising and data partners.

It also removes the question of what happens when payments stop. FlipHTML5 brings ads back to books made during a lapsed subscription, and Publuu takes flipbooks offline when its trial ends. Issuu restructured its plans in October 2024, and recent Trustpilot reviews complain about large price increases.

For developers, a library fits into the application itself. zinejs mounts inside a React, Vue, or plain HTML page, and its API and events let the book follow app state, which an iframe cannot do.

What zinejs does not do

zinejs is a viewer, not a publishing service. It has no upload screen, hosting, analytics dashboard, lead forms, hotspot editor, team roles, or digital sales. Page views can be sent to your own analytics from the pageChanged event, but the reports and forms are yours to build.

Notes on each maker

FlipHTML5 has the most features per dollar and a self-host HTML export from the $149 Pro plan, limited to five downloads a month. Its free plan carries ads and a watermark.

Heyzine is the closest to a library on price. The free plan has no ads, and $59 a year replaces its logo with yours. Its FAQ says technical users can self-host by downloading the source, but it does not say which plan allows it.

Flipsnack is the most enterprise-oriented, with catalog automation and CRM integrations. Self-hosting needs the $1,020 Business plan, and Flipsnack stops tracking a book once it is self-hosted.

Issuu is a publishing platform with an audience, not just a viewer. Removing ads from embeds costs $2,259 a year, and it has no right-to-left mode; its help center suggests reversing the page order instead.

Publuu has a strong interactive editor at $7 a month on annual billing, with no free plan. Its books stay online only while the account is paid.

Which to pick

  • No developer, small budget: Heyzine.
  • Interactive pages and a self-host export: FlipHTML5 Platinum.
  • Sales and marketing teams with CRM needs: Flipsnack.
  • Distribution to a reading audience: Issuu.
  • A developer who wants the book on the site, with no subscription: zinejs.

The choice is between a service and a component. If nobody on the team writes code, a hosted maker is the right tool.
